The Moon’s orbital path is important in Astrology because it represents cycles of growth and rebirth. During the New Moon, when the Sun and Moon are in the same Zodiac sign, the sky is dark, representing beginnings of the cycle or rebirth. As the Moon continues its orbit, it waxes, or increases in light, symbolizing a period of vigor and growth which then culminates at the Full Moon. At its maximum brightness, the Full Moon is when the Sun and Moon are in opposite Zodiac signs, and it is considered a time of fulfillment or culmination. It then begins decreasing in light, or waning, it signals the release and reabsorption of energy until it starts the cycle again at the next New Moon.
An Astrologer notes these cycles and how they can trigger different events in people’s lives. A New Moon is a period of beginnings and taking initiative, while the Full Moon is a period of culmination and release. When these Moon phases make mathematical relationships to sensitive points in our own birth charts, we feel their influence very strongly.
The most impactful of these cycles are the Eclipses. An Eclipse occurs when the New or Full Moon is conjunct the Moon’s North and South Nodes, which are mathematical points calculated for where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Earth’s orbit in their paths around the Sun. Sometimes described as New and Full Moons on steroids, a Solar Eclipse is a powerful New Moon, and a Lunar Eclipse is a powerful Full Moon. Like regular Full and New Moons, you feel the strongest impact of an Eclipse when it aligns with an important part of your own birth chart.
Eclipses fall in pairs of signs over about 18 to 24 months and travel backwards through the Zodiac signs, completing all 12 signs in just over 18 years. They serve to “open a portal” for important and more dramatic lasting changes in our lives. And because they occur in pairs of opposite signs, they often indicate finding balance between the broader complementary meanings they represent. They can bring sharp endings or unexpected synchronicities.
We are currently in the Aquarius/Leo Eclipse cycle, meaning events reflect themes of ego vs. the collective, creativity vs. conformity, and centralized power vs. power of the people. This year we will also begin the transition to the Capricorn/Cancer cycle, during which themes of structure vs. fluctuation and ambition vs. security will come to the forefront.
To determine the themes of New and Full Moons, use the keywords below. For example, a Full Moon in Leo will bring attention to your recent leadership or conscious effort (or lack thereof), while a New Moon in Pisces could mean the start of therapy or a creative project. Take a moment to think about how you can use this energy to your benefit, whether through deliberate action or divine acceptance.
If you know your birth chart, you can also factor in where you will feel this energy manifest by knowing in which house it falls. This Leo Full Moon in your 10th House, for example, could see you completing an important project that brings honors and opportunities in your career. In your 1st House, it could motivate you to make changes in your appearance to attract the attention of others. In your 8th House, it can reveal where you need to take charge of emotional or financial imbalances in your relationships.

Throughout history, many cultures have used the cycles of the Moon as a calendar to mark the seasons as well. The names assigned to the Full Moons today are taken from Native American and Medieval European cultures, such as the April Pink Moon, when a specific pink moss started to bloom in the springtime, and the November Beaver Moon, which marks a good time to hunt for pelts.
