Polarity, Triplicity & Quadruplicity

POLARITY

Polarity refers to the motivation of a sign. Masculine: Acts on environment. Self-starter. Feminine: Reacts in response to stimuli. Needs a push. Like all things, too much of one and not enough of another leads to imbalance. Too masculine and you could be too impulsive and rash in your actions. Too feminine and you lose the motivation to build up your life.

MASCULINE: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius

FEMININE: Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces

QUADRUPLICITY

Refers to a sign’s motivation. There are 4 signs in each.

CARDINAL: These are the goal-oriented signs that initiate action to build up life: Aries, Libra, Cancer and Capricorn. They may start out unsteady but build momentum over time by moving outward. Their positions in the archetype are on houses 1, 7, 4 & 10, like the points of a compass.

FIXED: The fixed signs represent the strength of stability and consistency: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Their goal is to conserve their energy and resist change. These signs are found on houses 2, 5, 8 and 11.

MUTABLE: The mutables have a fluctuating energy without a strong direction: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. It may sound scattered, but their strength is their adaptability. These signs are found on houses 3, 6, 9 and 12.

TRIPLICITY

You’ve probably heard things like “Leo is a fire sign” or “Cancer is a water sign.” This refers to the triplicity (elements), representing the drive and values of each sign. Each sign in an element expresses itself in a unique way.

EARTH: Earth signs are feminine. Their drive is material security and they value what’s tangible and practical. Earth signs are primarily concerned with “down-to-earth” matters, like reputation, acquisition of material comforts, and a steady income. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

WATER: Water signs are also feminine. Their drive is to continue life and they value emotional connection. They represent pleasure through love, family and sex.  Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

AIR: Air signs are masculine. Their drive is to exchange ideas (communication) and they value rational intelligence and ethics. They help the other signs come together for a common purpose. Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.

FIRE: Fire signs are also masculine. Their drive is freedom and they value independence and action - humanity’s ultimate goal. Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
